Australians set to spend big this Black Friday: MyBudget urges shoppers to plan first

Expert commentary from Tammy Barton, MyBudget Founder & Director
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Adelaide, 30 October 2025 – With Australian consumers expected to spend more than $6.8 billion across the Black Friday to Cyber Monday weekend, a 4% rise from last year, MyBudget Founder and Director Tammy Barton is urging shoppers to go in with a plan.
“Black Friday is a fantastic opportunity to grab a bargain on those big purchases, but honestly, it can be a real trap if you haven’t planned ahead,” Barton said. “We see so many people get caught up in the hype of ‘the sale of the year’ and then they’re left with a financial hangover come January. You want to save money, not create stress.”
Australians expected to spend more this holiday season
According to Deloitte’s 2025 retail survey, Australians are expected to spend nearly 14% more this holiday season, averaging around $1,140 per person. Barton says this optimism is positive, but it highlights the importance of smart budgeting.
“Having a personalised budget means you know exactly what you can comfortably afford to spend and, most importantly, when that money will be needed for other things like bills or Christmas presents,” Barton explained. “At MyBudget, we help people plan 12 months out so they can take advantage of Black Friday deals and still hit their savings goals, without having to rely on payment options like Buy Now Pay Later or maxing out the credit card.”
Retailers set for record-breaking Black Friday sales
The Australian Retail Association has predicted that half of retailers’ holiday revenue will come from events like Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Click Frenzy. Barton says that means the marketing pressure will be higher than ever.
“The retailers are absolutely ready, and the shoppers should be too,” she said. “If you know when your bills, car rego or Christmas expenses are due, you can plan your purchases right now and do it without any stress.”
MyBudget empowers Australians to shop smarter, not harder
“Black Friday should be about getting ahead, not falling behind,” Barton added. “A strong financial plan gives you the freedom to shop smartly, confidently and completely debt-free.”
