Black Friday Australia 2026: Have money ready when the deals drop
Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday 27 November, with Cyber Monday following on Monday 30 November. That puts it exactly four weeks before Christmas.

That timing can be genuinely useful. You may be able to save on gifts you already need, finish some of the Christmas shopping early and give deliveries plenty of time to arrive.
Of course, Black Friday also arrives when the Christmas lists are growing, the calendar is packed and the household budget is being asked to perform mini miracles. You might be hoping the sales will make Christmas more affordable. Or you might be looking at the bills, groceries and all the other costs piling up at this time of year and thinking, “How am I going to make this work?”
You do not need a perfect spreadsheet or a flawless plan. A good list can be a simple note in your phone. Add a realistic spending limit and a quick look at what is coming up next, and you have enough of a plan to make calmer decisions before the sale chaos begins.
What is Black Friday?
Black Friday is a huge annual sales event held on the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States. Here in Australia, it has grown into a major shopping period across websites and physical stores, with many offers continuing through to Cyber Monday.
And it is big. CommBank iQ data shows Australians spent $8 billion online during the two-week Black Friday period in 2025, up 9.3% from the year before.
When is Black Friday in Australia, and how long does it last?
Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday 27 November. The Black Friday sales period can last from one day to several weeks, depending on the retailer, with many offers continuing through Cyber Monday on 30 November.
| 2026 sales event | Date |
| Black Friday | Friday 27 November |
| Black Friday weekend | Saturday 28 to Sunday 29 November |
| Cyber Monday | Monday 30 November |
Some retailers start so early that Black Friday begins to feel like Black November. Check the closing date, delivery costs, returns policy and stock conditions for any offer you are considering.
And remember, a countdown clock is the retailer’s deadline. It does not have to become your shopping emergency.
Should I use Black Friday to do my Christmas shopping?
Yes, Black Friday can be a good time to buy planned Christmas gifts at genuine discounts. Shopping early may save you money, give deliveries time to arrive and help you avoid the last-minute crowds in December.
In 2025, Australian Christmas shopping research found that 55% of Australian gift buyers planned to buy Christmas presents during Black Friday.
If you want to outsmart December and plan your gift list and spending limit before the sales, read our guide to Christmas shopping on a budget.
It’s good to note that Black Friday is not the only major sale before Christmas. Click Frenzy 2026 runs from 27 to 30 October, and some retailers may run their own December promotions.
Those later deals and stock levels are never guaranteed. If a planned gift reaches the right price during Black Friday, buying it then can mean one less job for December you.
Black Friday can be a great opportunity to get ahead on Christmas spending. A clear list and budget make it easier to spot the deals that genuinely work for you and leave the rest behind.

What should I do before the Black Friday sales start?
Prepare by making a short shopping list, checking current prices and deciding your spending limit before the ads arrive. This gives you something more reliable than a flashing “70% off” banner to guide your decisions.
Think of it as a simple Black Friday spending plan: what you want, what it should cost and the total amount you can comfortably afford.
- Write down the exact item, model, size or version you want
- Save its current price from a few reputable retailers
- Set a maximum price for each item and the whole sale period
- Check the bills and savings your money already needs to cover
- Read recent reviews and check the returns policy before paying. Sale items still come with consumer rights if they are faulty, although change-of-mind returns depend on the retailer’s policy.
That little bit of preparation can reduce impulse spending, overspending and FOMO once the sales season kicks off.
A list is not very glamorous. It is, however, remarkably good at stopping a few “little bargains” from becoming one large credit card bill.
If numbers tend to turn into alphabet soup the moment you look at them, MyBudget’s free Personal Budget Template can help you put everything in one place.
Price-tracking tools, price comparison websites and AI tools can help you check whether an advertised saving is a genuine deal. Always verify the exact model, retailer and final checkout price before buying.

Are Black Friday deals worth it?
A Black Friday deal is more likely to be worthwhile when the item was already on your list, the price is genuinely lower and the total cost fits comfortably within your budget.
Check these three numbers:
- The usual price: What did the exact item cost before the sale?
- The checkout price: What will you pay after delivery, accessories, memberships and other charges?
- Your available balance: What can you comfortably spend after your bills, everyday expenses and savings are covered? Learn how to calculate your available balance.
Once the numbers add up, pause for one final gut check:
Would I still want this if it wasn’t on sale?
If the answer is no, close the tab. You have lost nothing. You may have just saved yourself 100%.
Quick Black Friday traps to watch for
- A discount based on an inflated “was” price
- Delivery fees that quietly eat into the saving
- Countdown clocks pushing you to decide too quickly
- Return conditions that change during sale periods
- Credit card and Buy Now Pay Later repayments that pile up after the sale
- Fake websites, scammers and unfamiliar sellers without secure payment options.

Should I buy on Black Friday or wait for Cyber Monday?
There is no guaranteed winner between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The better time to buy is when a shortlisted item reaches the price you decided was worthwhile.
Keep comparing the same product across the weekend, but remember that stock can sell out and prices can change. There comes a point when chasing another $10 off costs more time than it saves money.
Set your target price. Buy when the offer meets it. If it doesn’t, keep your money for something more important.

What if I don’t know what I can afford to spend in the sales?
If you do not know what you can afford, pause and look at the bills and expenses due now and over the next three months. MyBudget’s free Personal Budget Template gives you an easy place to jot everything down.
For a quick reality check:
- Write down the money you have now and the income you expect over the next three months
- List your bills, everyday costs, Christmas spending and other expenses due during that time
- Subtract those costs and leave yourself a buffer for anything unexpected.
What remains gives you a clearer idea of what you may be able to spend right now without leaving the next few months short.
If all of that feels overwhelming, we get it. The mental load of money is real. A constant hum of due dates, late fees, school costs, car rego and every financial “what if?” competing with work, family and all the other admin of adulting.
MyBudget can help you put structure around your money and share some of that load, so your finances are less likely to be the first thing pushed aside when life gets busy. We give you clear next steps, steady progress towards your goals and more headspace for everything else in life.

Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday 27 November in Australia, with Cyber Monday following on Monday 30 November. Many Australian retailers begin their promotions before the official date and may continue them across the weekend or for several weeks, so check each retailer’s start and finish times.
The retail meaning of Black Friday began in Philadelphia in the 1950s. Police used the name for the day after Thanksgiving, when shoppers and visitors clogged the streets and created traffic jams. Retailers later gave the gloomy name a sunnier spin. By the 1980s, they promoted the idea that strong holiday sales moved their accounts from ‘in the red’ (losing money) to ‘in the black’ (making a profit).
Black Friday deals are not always the lowest available price. Compare the exact item with its pre-sale price and competing retailers, including delivery and other charges. A genuine discount provides the most value when the item was already planned and the final cost fits your budget.
Neither event is always better. Prices vary by retailer, product and stock availability. Set a target price beforehand, then choose the first suitable offer that meets it. Waiting until Cyber Monday may produce a lower price, but it can also reduce your choice.
Click Frenzy comes first in 2026, running from 27 to 30 October, while Black Friday falls on 27 November. Click Frenzy is an Australian online sales event bringing offers from participating retailers into one place. Black Friday is a broader global sale period across retailers’ websites and physical stores.
Neither is automatically better. If something on your list reaches your target price during Click Frenzy, buying it then can save you waiting and tick one more job off the Christmas list. Otherwise, keep comparing and see what Black Friday brings.
