What happens in a free consultation?

MyBudget is committed to reducing financial stress in the community, one individual, family and household at a time. Everything we do is focused on helping people achieve their financial goals.

When you arrive for your free consultation, you’ll meet with one of our personal budgeting consultants. Our consultants are formally trained in interviewing, financial analysis and budget counselling. As well as being highly professional, they are also friendly, understanding and easy to talk to. They are never judgemental.

By the time you finish the consultation, our aim is that you feel less stressed about your finances than when you arrived. You will have gained deep insights into your financial situation and all of your options. You will feel optimistic and have a clear sense of the way forward.

They [MyBudget’s staff] were fantastic. They let you know straight away that you’re not stupid, that there are people in the same situation—both people who don’t earn a lot of money and people who earn good money.

Personal budgeting that really works.

Since MyBudget first started in 1999, we have continuously improved a personal budgeting system that really works. The budgets we prepare are true financial plans. As well as taking your household and daily living expenses into account, your budget plan will detail your finances over a 12 month period.

Your consultation is absolutely confidential and our recommendations will be tailored to meet your specific circumstances. There are no one-size-fits-all debt solutions at MyBudget. You are under no obligation to become a MyBudget client. The information we provide to you at the free consultation is yours to keep at no charge.

How long will the consultation take?

The free consultation takes approximately two hours. Please make sure that you allow at least two hours for the appointment so that we have enough time to examine your financial situation, all of your options and explain how our service works. We’ll also be pleased to answer all of your questions.

What do I need to bring to the consultation?

  • Proof of income (a pay slip or bank account showing your income)
  • A copy of all of your bills (eg. electricity, gas, car registration, insurances, phone, internet, school fees etc.)
  • Credit card and loan statements
  • Old debts and any letters from debt collectors

If you can’t find a record for each and every expense, please write down the type of expense and the amount on a piece of paper. The accuracy of your personal budgeting plan will depend on the accuracy of the information you supply to us.

What happens during the consultation?

The initial part of the consultation is dedicated to finding out as much as possible about your specific financial situation. To do that, we’ve created a list of questions which will help us to analyse your finances and create a personal budgeting plan for you. This process takes about 30 minutes—it may be a little longer or shorter depending on your number of expenses.

In the second part of the consultation we look closely at your income, assets, expenses and debts to create a personal budgeting plan that achieves your financial objectives:

  • We’ll work with you to create a debt solution strategy that works for you and your family.
  • We’ll formulate a savings plan into your budget.
  • We’ll prioritise your bills and payments and examine if we need to negotiate any debt relief arrangements with your creditors. (Our vast experience in debt negotiation means that we know what sorts of terms are achievable. In many instances, we can negotiate for interest rate and repayment reductions or even arrange for payments to cease for a period of time while you get back on track.)
  • We’ll examine other potential debt reduction strategies such as debt consolidation.

Tell me about my personal budgeting plan.

Working closely with you, our personal budgeting consultant will develop a balanced budget that addresses all of your financial objectives. We will adjust your personal budgeting plan until you are 100 percent happy with it. It’s important that your personal budgeting plan represents a roadmap to a financial future which is positive and sustainable.

By the end of the consultation you will have gained a thorough understanding of your personal budgeting plan, debt solutions that address your specific circumstances and how the MyBudget service works. We will explain our fees in detail and look forward to answering your questions.

There is no pressure and no sales pitch—just debt solutions and a personal budgeting plan that help create the foundation for financial security. It’s up to you to decide if you’d like to become a MyBudget client.

After the free consultation with MyBudget, Sean explains that he felt more than just peace of mind…

It was exciting to think ‘hey, this is great. We can actually get on top of this’. I’d been worried about it for so long and I’d got myself in such a state over it that I couldn’t think of anything else. All of a sudden they [MyBudget] have come along with a plan with for us and said ‘you can achieve your goals.’ It was great.
